Agropoli
Both for the spontaneous architecture and for the folklore of beaches, extent of olive yards, of vineyards, of rocky balconies on the mountains, with their small inlets, plenty of fig-trees and Indian fig, Agropoli is an evocative town, charming and always with mild climate. The town is located in the "National Park of Cilento and Vallo of Diano", sincer 1998 it is included in the list of "UNESCO World Heritage sites", is close to the archaeological sites of Paestum and Velia, and the "Certosa of Padula".
Agropoli has the form of a natural amphitheater, surrounding the blue sea ("
Blue Flag" for several years, among the Municipalities selected by the "Foundation for Environmental Education", in collaboration with the "Consorzio Batterie Esauste" - "Consortium of Exhausted

Batteries"), and by the Alburni, Picentini and Lattari chains of mountains, that constitute natural platforms on which lean out cities that from Paestum to Salerno, from Amalfi to Sorrento, and up to Capri, run and lie down on the beautiful bay. It is worthy to visit the Castle of the period "Angioino-Aragonese", and the medieval village with the churches of "Ss. Pietro e Paolo" (29 June), "Madonna di Costantinopoli" (24 July), and "Madonna Addolorata" (15 September).

Brief historical notes
The area was already inhabited in the Neolithic age, but only in the age of Bronze and Iron, stable native populations settled down here, dedicated to hunting and fishing. The Greeks, before and after the foundation of "Poseidonia", around the year 625 B.C., have used the natural bay, located to the east of the promontory on which Agropoli rises, close to the mouth of the river "Testene", so called in the past as "Mouth". In Roman age, on the coast of the present "S. Marco", has been developed a sea-town called "Ercula", that prospered around I Century B.C., and V Century A.D. Due to Vandal invasions, the inhabitants of "Ercula" decided to move to the promontory. In the VI Century, during the Greek-Gothic war (in the period from 535 to 553), the Byzantines strengthened the site, that was denominated Acropolis, as well as, the town "at the top".

In the year 915, Saracens, who had taken over in the year 882 from the Byzantines, abandoned Agropoli, and it returned back to the jurisdiction of the Bishops, up to the beginning of the XV Century. Since then, up to 1806, when the feudalism was abolished, the town passed through different vassals. Agropoli was particularly touched by the barbaric invasions of the XVI and XVII Century, that caused the diminution of its inhabitants to some hundred. In the XIX Century the town grew and extended beyond the medieval walls.
